The SoFA Method

SoFA Design Institute is a place where abstract and esoteric ideas are encouraged. Rather than leave these ideas in the theoretical realm, our professors often challenge students to measure their concepts against real-world parameters. From materials to markets, from technology to branding, we bring high-flying concepts back to earth. Why? Because we consider design not only as an art - but a very real vocation with excellent economic potential. At SoFA Design Institute, problems will be solved creatively - but also logically and effectively.

Our subject areas are divided into several distinct, but closely interrelated components. Design is king, certainly - but far from being the only important one. In fact, SoFA Design Institute provides a solid grounding in design-related technology, general education, and business innovation.

Each program is headed by a hands-on department chair who works closely with faculty and our Dean to ensure freshness and relevance in the classroom. A routine system of academic evaluation helps ensure the continued relevance of our subject matter. One of our greatest strengths as an institution is a highly flexible decision-making structure, which allows rapid change to occur inside and outside of the classroom. In addition, our distinct approach to instruction, which we call the SoFA Method, suggests that design is a journey shared by both faculty and students.

As a design school, we have the obligation to help elevate the creative skills of the SoFA Design Institute student. We have done this by implementing a number of policies; this includes a strict limit on the number of students registered in a design studio. In this way, each student can be assured of accessing a true mentoring experience with his or her design teacher. By the same token, we expect students to measure up to our standards by pushing themselves to meet the high goals set by the Institute.

Our stated policy is to produce design leaders. What is the difference between the design leader and the mere designer? Often it is the ability to convey ideas confidently and forcefully. For this reason, each of our design classes include sessions where students pitch their ideas to their peers - explaining and defending their work via the globally-accepted methodology based on critical thinking.
