Design Discovery is a curated pre-college experience designed for high school students passionate about interior design, architecture, and the art of shaping space. This seven-session immersive program explores the creative and technical aspects of interior design, providing hands-on experience and learning opportunities from industry professionals.

From concept development and spatial planning to material selection and model making. Students will explore how interiors and architecture work together to bring ideas to life. They’ll even build a room-scale model to turn their vision into a tangible space.

Whether you dream of designing spaces or launching your own studio, Design Discovery equips you with the foundational skills, industry insights, and creative confidence to take your first bold step into the design world.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Session 1: Design 101 - Intro to Interior Design & Architecture (June 1, Monday)
A fun intro to interior design and architecture—exploring the role of designers, finding your design style, and discovering how they work together to create thoughtful spaces.

Fun Icebreaker Activity: Find Your Design Style!

Session 2: The Art of Space - Design Principles & Elements (June 3, Wednesday)
Students explore core design principles like balance, proportion, rhythm, and contrast. Then, through a hands-on spatial planning exercise, they discover how layout choices shape experience and bring interiors and buildings to life.

Session 3: Studio + Firm Visit—A Look Inside the Design World (June 5, Friday)
Step into an interior design studio tour and an architectural firm visit to give students a real-world peek into interior design and architecture, capped with an observation challenge to spot design details in action.

Session 4: Colors, Textures & Materials—Shaping Experience (June 8, Monday)

Students explore how colors, textures, and materials shape spaces—then craft their own Color & Material Board to visualize their design vision.

Session 5: Design in Action - Create Your Own Dream Space (June 10, Wednesday)
 In this session, you’ll begin working on your personal room-scale model project, bringing your vision into reality. With guidance from a licensed interior designer, you’ll sketch, assemble, and refine your design while developing essential skills in conceptualization and spatial planning.

Session 6: The Final Project – Personal Room-Scale Model (June 15, Monday)
This session is all about finalizing and perfecting their scale models. Students will add finishing touches to their designs and prepare to present their creative process.

A collaborative critique session will encourage constructive feedback and help them refine their work.

Session 7: Design Lab Showcase (TBA)

Celebrate your creative journey at the Design Lab Showcase! A gallery-style presentation open to family, friends, and members of the design community. Participants will present their final designs, demonstrating their creative growth and understanding of interior design principles.

The event will conclude with a Certificate of Completion ceremony, recognizing their growth and dedication throughout the program.
