The Certificate Program in Fashion Design and Construction is a one-semester course that builds a strong foundation in both creative design and technical garment-making. Using the SoFA Method, students will learn the process of conceptualizing, sketching, and constructing original fashion pieces. The program combines critical design thinking with hands-on construction skills preparing students to confidently advance to higher studies or careers in fashion design.

Course Outline:
Design Studio 1: Creative Problem Solving
This course introduces the SoFA Method design process, a creative approach that encourages students to think critically, explore deeply, and design with intention. Through guided minor and major projects, students will learn how to generate ideas from a focused theme, develop their concepts through research and experimentation, and translate them into original design outputs. The SoFA Method emphasizes creativity grounded in process helping students build confidence in their own design voice while understanding the discipline behind great design.
Basic Illustration
This foundational course introduces students to the art and discipline of fashion illustration, a key skill in bringing design ideas to life. The course also explores techniques in rendering texture, color, and silhouette to help students express their creative vision clearly and confidently. By the end of the course, students will be able to translate their design concepts into professional fashion sketches that capture both style and storytelling.
Pattern Making and Sewing 1
This course introduces students to the fundamentals of sewing and garment construction. They will learn how to confidently operate a sewing machine and apply essential stitching and assembly techniques. Students will also be guided in creating basic pattern blocks using their own measurements and translating these into flat patterns building the technical foundation needed to construct well-fitted garments and bring their design ideas to life.
