_____
PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
Our Fashion Design and Marketing (2-Year Program) brings together the creative, technical, and business dimensions of fashion. Students develop their own design perspective while building the practical skills needed to develop, produce, price, and market their collections.
At the core of the SoFA experience is Design Studio — a distinctly SoFA approach to learning through the continuous process of thinking, making, testing, and refining. Across four Design Studio classes, students work through their ideas in depth, developing their understanding of design, pattern making, sewing, illustration, and collection development while learning to make deliberate creative decisions.
The studio is supported by essential areas such as color, fabric, pricing, retail, and fashion marketing, giving students a broader understanding of what it takes to work in fashion today. The program prepares students to build careers as fashion professionals or develop their own brands, with the opportunity to present their final collections at SoFA’s annual fashion show.
_____
OUTCOMES:
Students develop the technical competence to take a design from idea to finished garment, learning how to translate concepts into patterns, construct garments, and execute finished pieces on the mannequin. They also build proficiency in both hand illustration and computer-aided design (CAD), giving them the tools to communicate and develop their ideas across different stages of the design process.
The program also covers Marketing, Merchandising, Entrepreneurship, and other business disciplines, giving students a practical understanding of how fashion moves from design and garment execution to the market. This broader perspective prepares graduates to pursue careers as fashion designers and atelier owners, fashion production managers, retail professionals, and entrepreneurs building their own fashion brands.
