Pattern Making & Sewing 1

Students will learn how to develop basic blocks based on their own or given measurements. The course will allow students to gain confidence in basic sewing and construction techniques. Students will learn how to transfer measurements to flat patterns and develop basic skills in the usage of the sewing machine.

Students will learn basic sewing machine skills to gain confidence in basic sewing and construction techniques. They will learn how to develop basic blocks based on given measurements or their own and how to transfer measurements to flat patterns. Classes will be taught mainly in English.

Pattern Making and Sewing 1 - C (FACE TO FACE)

This course runs for 1 semester or approximately 4 to 5 months.

COURSE OUTLINE:

Week 1: Introduction to Sewing Tools and Equipment; Discussion on Taking Body Measurements

Weeks 2–4: Lecture and Demonstration on Sewing Machine Usage and Preparation of Sewing Materials

Week 5: Drafting the Basic Skirt and Waistband

Weeks 6–8: Demonstration of Various Seams, Hems, and Finishes

Week 9: Midterm Assessment: Machine Threading and Operation

Week 10: Individual Consultations (Conducted During Class Hours)

Weeks 11–13: Discussion and Practice of Sewing the Basic Skirt

Weeks 14–15: Drafting the Basic Bodice

Week 16: Drafting the Basic Sleeve

Week 17: Sewing the Bodice and Sleeve

Week 18: Transferring Patterns to Hard Paper and Fitting the Bodice, Sleeve, and Skirt

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Muslin- 10 yards
  • Thread, Hand Sewing Needle
  • Cloth Shears, Paper Scissors, Thread Cutter
  • Bias Tape
  • Zipper (regular 7”- 2 pcs, Invisible- 2 pcs)
  • Buttons, Hook and Eye, Snaps
  • Pattern Paper (at least 6 sheets)
  • Pencils, Pen, Marker, Tailor’s Chalk, Eraser
  • Rulers (2”x 18” Grading Ruler, Hip Curve, French Curve)
  • Stiff Paper or Bristol Board
  • Bobbins and bobbin case for Hi-Speed
  • Screwdriver
  • Regular Presser foot for high-speed

SEWING MATERIALS:

  • Regular Zipper Foot and Invisible Zipper Foot for Hi-Speed
  • Pack Hi-Speed Sewing Machine Needles DB 11 0r 14
  • Tweezers for edging machine Materials added for face-to-face classes

OUTCOMES:

The course aims to impart students with introductory knowledge of pattern drafting for ladies’ apparel and teach basic sewing techniques using industrial machines.
