COURSE OUTLINE:

Session 1: Fashion Foundations — Defining Your Creative Identity (June 3, Tues)

Fashion is a powerful form of self-expression. In this session, participants will explore how historical events, cultural shifts, and iconic designers have influenced the fashion landscape. Through hands-on activities, they’ll develop a Designer Identity Board — a visual representation of their aesthetic and creative vision.

The afternoon session will open with a short talk by the young fashion entrepreneurs behind the brand, In the Moment Apparel.

Session 2: Textile Technology + Designer's Insights (June 5, Thurs)

Understanding textiles is essential to creating designs that come to life. Participants will explore a variety of fabrics and learn about their properties and applications.

In the afternoon, gain exclusive insights from Adam Pereyra, a SoFA alumnus with experience at LVMH and Vogue, who will share his journey in fashion and jewellery design.

Session 3: Sustainability in Fashion — Thrift Flip (June 10, Tues)

Sustainability is a driving force in today’s fashion industry. Participants will explore the principles of sustainable fashion by repurposing old garments. Using upcycling techniques such as cutting, sewing, and embellishing, they’ll learn how small design choices can reduce waste and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Session 4: From Studio to Sketch: Behind The Atelier + Tools of the Trade (June 14, Sat)

In this exclusive behind-the-scenes visit, experience the inner workings of a designer’s studio. From concept development and fabric selection to garment construction, participants will observe how a collection comes to life.

In the afternoon, participants will engage in a live fashion illustration demo to deepen their understanding, exploring how to translate design ideas onto paper. They'll also learn the fundamentals of color theory, take accurate measurements, and learn the parts and functions of a sewing machine.

Session 5: Designing Your Capsule Collection (June 17, Tues)

It’s time to bring creative concepts to life. Participants will begin designing their capsule collection — a curated selection of garments representing their brand identity. With mentorship and guided feedback, they’ll refine their concepts, sketch their designs, and select materials.

Session 6: Capsule Collection: Presentation and Collaborative Critique (June 19, Thurs)

Presenting a collection is a core part of the fashion design process. Participants will showcase their capsule collections and explain their creative vision and design decisions. They will receive constructive feedback in a critique session, helping them refine their work and gain valuable insights. This experience mirrors real-world presentations to buyers, editors, and creative directors, preparing them for future opportunities in the industry.

Session 7: Design Lab Showcase (June 21, Sat)

Celebrate your creative journey at the Design Lab Showcase! A gallery-style presentation open to family, friends, and members of the design community. Participants will display their final capsule collections, sharing their design evolution and brand vision. The event will conclude with a Certificate of Completion ceremony, recognizing their growth and dedication throughout the program.
