COURSE OUTLINE - Introduction to Fashion Construction

Session 1: Getting Started: Measurements & Math
The session will start with an introduction to garment construction. Students will learn the importance of accurate body measurements, fractions in pattern making, and how precision leads to a perfect fit.
Session 2: Thread, Test, and Sew: Meet Your Machine
In this session, the participants will learn the machine operation, sewing exercises, and an introduction to the edging machine for clean finishes.
Session 3: Seamless Details: The Finishing Touches
In this session, the participants will explore essential seam finishes and fasteners that enhance the durability and aesthetics of your garments.
Session 4: Pattern & Precision: Pencil Skirt
In this session, the students will learn how to draft a pattern and cut fabric for a custom-fit pencil skirt.
Session 5: Stitching It Together: Pencil Skirt
In this session, students will bring their pencil skirts to life by assembling the fabric pieces and sewing them together with the instructor's guidance.
Session 6: The Final Details – Pencil Skirt
In this session, students refine their skirts with essential finishing techniques, ensuring a polished and well-constructed result.
Session 7: Designing the Perfect Fit – Torso Blouse
In this session, students will advance their skills by drafting a pattern for a torso blouse, preparing them for more complex garment construction.
Session 8: Fabric Cutting: Torso Blouse
In this session, students will practice precision cutting techniques to ensure their blouse pieces are accurately prepared for assembly.
Session 9: Sewing the Torso Blouse

Session 2 (F2F): Translating Art into Form: Mood Sculpture Sketching
In this session, participants will present their chosen artwork and explore its emotional depth through sketching. By translating visual art into a Mood Sculpture, students will learn to capture atmosphere, texture, and storytelling in design.
Session 3 (Online): From Concept to Creation: Mood Sculptures & Fashion Narratives
In this session, participants delves into the creative process through presentation of Mood Sculptures, research and sketch breastplates while analyzing the Elements of Design. The discussion extends to various fashion avenues, guiding students in brand research and understanding industry pathways.
Session 4 (F2F): Fashion Spectrum: RTW vs. Avant-Garde
In this session, participants will explore the dynamic contrast between Ready-to-Wear (RTW) and Avant-Garde fashion. Participants will present their breastplate sketches while discussing how design choices shift between commercial wearability and artistic expression.
Session 5 (Online): Final Form: Breastplate Design & The World of Textiles
In this session, participants will present their final breastplate design, showcasing their creative vision and design development. The discussion will then shift to textiles, exploring their essential role in fashion design, from material selection to functionality and aesthetics.
Session 6 (F2F): Defining Identity: Brand Presentation
In this session, participants will present their chosen brand(s), analyzing their identity, design philosophy, and market positioning. Through these presentations, students will gain insights into what makes a brand stand out in the fashion industry.
Session 7 (Online): From Concept to Collection: Refining Your Designs
This session focuses on presenting the first draft of 20 sketches, where participants will receive feedback and guidance. Through a refining process, they will narrow down their designs to a final selection of 8 looks, ensuring a cohesive and well-developed collection.
Session 8 (F2F): Final Vision: Capsule Collection Presentation
In this session, participants will showcase their fully rendered capsule collection sketches, complete with fabric swatches. This presentation highlights the evolution of their designs, demonstrating a cohesive narrative, material selection, and overall creative direction.

Learn about how the business of fashion is structured and developed.
Explore about the key external factors that influence business decisions.
Analyze the concerns and challenges for fashion retail brands including
sustainability and ethical practice.
Session 2: (Face to Face) - Line Planning Fundamentals and Production Process
Learn about the fundamentals of planning a full line of products for a
Fashion Retail Brand. Learn the basics about design development and
production process.
Session 3: (Online) - Business & Data Analytics
Learn to find, understand and use data in a fashion business environment,
including customer profiling and trend forecasting. Devise creative and
effective solutions for problems faced by brands.
Session 4: (Face to Face) - Consumer Behavior
Explore consumer behavior analysis in greater detail, and how brands use
this to inform future strategy. Understand purchase decisions, marketing and
branding, learn how good customer service leads to increased brand loyalty.
Session 5: (Online) - Fashion Retail Environments
Investigate the ever changing nature of the fashion retail industry, including
how brands are merging their online and physical stores. Research the
concepts of virtual, omnichannel and experiential retailing.
Session 6: (Face to Face) - Environmental, Social & Corporate Governance
Learn how modern brands balance business goals with environmental and
social concerns, and increasing consumer demands for sustainability.
Session 7: (Online) - Formulating a Retail Brand
Learning from our lectures about the business of fashion retail, the students
will make a feasibility study of their own retail brand. From the
philosophical handle of their label/brand, to consumer behavior and product
execution, the students will produce a complete brand brief and line
planning.
Session 8: (Face to Face) - Presentation of Fashion Retail Brands by the students
Each student will present their own Brand Brief and Feasibility Study.
