Fashion Design Short Courses

Expanding one's design capability is a continuous process. SoFA Design Institute recognizes the need for enthusiasts, college graduates and students, and even current professionals, to gain a more comprehensive grasp of the ever-evolving practice of Fashion Design.

The following are 18-session programs that touch on the varied disciplines with two courses of study - Fashion or Interior Design. Each class lasts for 3 hours and is scheduled once a week and runs for 18 sessions. Depending on the chosen subject matter, tuition ranges from PHP16,785 to PHP 21,510

COURSES

Design Studio 1: Creative Problem Solving

The course will be divided into two parts where each part will consist of a minor project and a major project. These will be accomplished by using different ways of generating ideas combined with some themes and concepts to come up with original designs. They will not be limited with their inexperience in putting garments together and should be liberated by using a multitude of materials instead.

Basic Illustration

During this course, students will be introduced to drawing a woman’s figure in the fashion sense and how the body is manipulated to show movement. We will go over features such as the face, muscles, the feet and the hands. The drawing of garments will also be introduced in this course.

Pattern Making and Sewing 1

Students will learn how to develop basic blocks based on given measurements or their own sizing. They will learn how to transfer measurements to flat patterns and develop basic skills in the use of the sewing machine to gain confidence in basic sewing and construction techniques.

Textile Technology

Textile Technology course provides a foundation course for students to gain basic understanding of the various qualities of textiles as the technical basis for fashion design. The course focuses on the history, construction and properties of different textiles, while providing an understanding of how textiles are created.

The course also will help students develop an understanding of the use of textiles within contemporary fashion.

Fashion Marketing & Promotions

Fashion Marketing & Promotion involves the study of fashion marketing management concepts, which include planning, market analysis and marketing communication. Fashion advertising, retail promotion and public relations will also be thoroughly discussed and practiced in the course.

The course will allow students to learn marketing concepts, processes and strategies, which are integral in the operation of a successful fashion business. Apart from marketing management course work, students will be extensively exposed to the world of fashion promotion, advertising and public relations in order for them to gain a better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a fashion marketer.

Fashion Merchandising & Buying

Fashion Merchandising & Buying tackles all activities in the Merchandising Cycle - having the right fashion merchandise available in the proper quantities and place, at the right time, price, and quality, to meet customer satisfaction at a profit. It also introduces concepts by which retailers create special store-brand merchandise for targeted customer segments.

The course introduces basic concepts, principles and techniques used by retail buyers as they complete their day-to-day duties and responsibilities. A step-by-step approach is presented for buying tasks that give participants the opportunity to develop buying skills with a marketing orientation.

Fashion Product Development

Fashion Product Development studies the process of product development - from research, production, all the way to distribution. Students will work on market and trend research and plan a design and marketing project involving a new product range for a specific market. The course will enable students to develop fashion products through a detailed process - from ideation to market-ready product - applicable to both couture and retail.

History of Design

History of Design is designed to provide students with a keen understanding of the various clothing and fashion styles throughout history; summarizing the way people have dressed from ancient to modern times. The course aims to chart fashion progression through the ages and to aid students in future product development and designing endeavors.

Basic Draping

Basic Draping class is essential as this is another skill on how students may construct and design garments. It is through this discipline that they learn to appreciate working with the dressform and derive designs from it. They will also learn how different fabric behaves when they manipulate it on a 3-dimensional form.

Fashion Styling

The course will aid students in establishing their unique fashion philosophy, and will tackle theories and facts associated with fashion styling. Specialists in fashion styling, brand marketing and television/movie styling will also be invited to speak in class to broaden the students’ understanding of the profession and the real-world industry. The course will conclude in a magazine editorial project, which most practicing fashion stylists specialize in.

Makeup Techniques

Makeup Techniques focuses on the fundamentals of make-up application - from theories to understanding how makeup products and tools work. The course will tackle varied aspects of makeup application including how to create makeup looks for print, live shows, television, and film formats.
